Is Cranky Kong Playable in Tropical Freeze?

The game’s new box art hints at the possibility!

Look at the new European box art for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze! This new cover features all of the confirmed playable characters, including Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, and Dixie Kong. Yet, you might be shocked to find out that Cranky Kong has somehow snuck onto the bottom of the box!

Previous iterations of this game’s box art are virtually the same, but are missing Cranky Kong’s presence. So, why is he standing alongside the game’s three protagonists now? Part of me really wants to believe that he is the forth playable character in the game, but I could see him falling into another obligatory side character role. However, with the confirmation of a secret character in Super Mario 3D World, I’m able to remain hopeful that Cranky Kong may be a playable character.

What do you think? Are you hopeful that Cranky Kong will be playable this time around? Let us know in the comments below!

I’d love to see Cranky out on an adventure; he’s been saying how much better he’d be than these young punks for years. Now we could find out if that’s just wind or if he’s still got some barrel-chucking chops.

I imagine him as not particularly fast or strong, but with a tiny hit box. Where the others have to use precision timing or deft maneuvering, he can just squeeze by. And where others will fall if they miss a ledge by an inch, Cranky could whip out his cane and pull himself up.
