Xbox continues to be something of a wildcard as the company pushes to be both multiplatform and a console-maker… at the same time. Rumors have been swirling for a while that Microsoft is looking to release an Xbox-branded handheld not unlike Nintendo Switch at some point. Now, The Verge and Windows Central are reporting that this handheld could be closer to launch than anyone likely was predicting—this year, to be exact.
The details are a little odd, but the scuttlebutt is that ASUS and Microsoft will produce a handheld to launch this summer with a price tag somewhere in the neighborhood of $499 to $599. However, this console would then be followed by some sort of first-party Xbox console that will play games natively and launch in 2027. How realistic is it that in one breath Xbox is preaching the cloud and not being bound to any single console, and in the next hunkering down to make not one, but two Xbox handhelds?
Needless to say, take this one with a grain of salt, folks. What we know for certain is that Xbox is excited about putting some of its games on Nintendo Switch 2, although we don’t know which games will ultimately make the cut. While we all sit and wonder, share your thoughts down in the comments and on social media!
