Nintendo Switch 2 has had pricing concerns since before and after launch. Initially, Switch 2 pre-orders were supposed to open on April 9, 2025; however, Nintendo, in response to the bevy of tariffs that the White House had imposed on countries around the world, pushed back the pre-order window so as to ascertain how to handle the correlating bump in prices that would result from this move. In the months since Switch 2’s launch, Nintendo stated that it maintained the announced $450 price point for the console in order to “give consumers that comfort that they would be able to purchase at that price.”
Flash forward to now, and the rumor is that Nintendo is once more having to weigh the cost of Switch 2, but this time in the face of rising memory costs. With the boom of AI has come a shortage of chips, which in turn has pressured companies like Nintendo to reconsider how it will handle the pricing of their hardware. Nintendo has maintained that it will try different options to avoid raising prices, including bumping up manufacturing of Switch 2, but a recent report now alleges that Nintendo is nonetheless still “contemplating” the move.
The situation is so dire that even other game companies like Sony are supposedly altering plans for upcoming hardware releases in the wake of the chip shortage. As we learn more about the situation, we’ll be sure to update here, so keep an eye on Nintendojo for more.
