Super Mario 3D Land Director Talks Unused Ideas
In his keynote address at the Game Developers Conference, Koichi Hayashida, the director of the acclaimed Super Mario 3D Land, revealed several interesting gameplay ideas that were ultimately scrapped from the final product. Among these ideas, the team considering giving Mario the ability to skate on half-pipes using Koopa shells. They also considering including certain cockroach enemies that could only be defeated by physically closing the 3DS, though this was likely discarded to avoid causing any scratches to the top screen.
In a more candid interview, Hayashida also revealed that the development team considering resurrecting Kuribo’s shoe for the plumber’s 3DS adventure, but they ultimately decided against it as they could not come up with an interesting way to integrate it into the gameplay.
