When Pokémon Sun and Moon released in 2016, the games made a number of deviations from the classic Pokémon formula. While the Alola region offered its own take on the Pokémon League, it abandoned the concept of Gym Battles, replacing them with unique “Island Challenges.” Fans have known for some time that Gym Battles would return in a big way in Sword and Shield, but apparently, it’s much bigger than anyone anticipated! In an interview with Game Informer, Director Shigeru Ohmori revealed that Sword and Shield will feature 18 Gyms, in total!
“There are 18 different types of gyms in the story, and depending on the version, which gyms are in the minor league and which gyms are in the major league are different. For example, in Sword, the fighting-type gym will be in the major league, but in Shield, the ghost-type. The idea is that every year, the Galar region is playing and which gyms make it into the minor league versus the major league changes.”
The idea of separate leagues and more gyms for players to explore is exciting to say the least! It will also be interesting to see what impact this will have on the anime, particularly since Ash will be splitting his time between Galar and the previous regions.
