Hideki Kamiya got a lot of pulses racing recently thanks to a video on his YouTube channel. The creator, who parted ways with Platinum Games back in 2023 and went on to form yet another studio (dubbed Clovers), regularly gives his thoughts (sometimes to a fault) on a variety of things, including the games industry. Responding to fan questions, Kamiya was asked about his interest in remaking Devil May Cry, the action series he helped to bring to life on PlayStation 2 back in 2001. Here’s what he said (scroll to the 4:32 mark if the video doesn’t automatically take you there):
When was that? 2001?
We made that 24 years ago. I don’t usually replay my own games after release. Devil May Cry is no exception. But once in a while, I catch gameplay clips and think, “Yeah, this really does feel like a 24-year-old game design.” With today’s technology and game design approach, of course I’d want to remake it from the ground up. If that ever happens… well, I don’t think seriously unless it’s really happening, so I don’t have anything in mind, but if the time comes—I’ll come up with something. That’s what I do.
Kamiya threw another game in that will get longtime fans grinning: “Also, let me handle Viewtiful Joe too.” Considering Kamiya is handling development duties on the Ōkami sequel for Capcom, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that both of these dream projects could become a reality. However, in today’s puritanical climate, both Devil and Viewtiful would likely see a lot of the content censored or removed to satisfy activists. Still, it can be fun to dream…
