Ubisoft’s E3 presentation leaned heavily into near future, tactical action with updates to their Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, and Division franchises being major focuses this year; though there was the ubiquitous new Just Dance, of course. But probably the most interesting bit of news for Switch owners came right at the end with the reveal of a brand-new IP, Gods & Monsters, from the studio behind Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.
As this is an Ubisoft game, Gods & Monsters will be an open world adventure, however it promises a much more colorful and cartoony approach in contrast to the mostly gritty collection of games on display today. Beyond the expected promises of “surprises, epic battles, quests and fantastical creatures,” the press release also mentions gliding in the air, something that immediately brings to mind some Breath of the Wild inspiration. Though seeing how the trailer doesn’t really present actual gameplay, we’ll have to wait to see how the game will actually work.
The game draws heavy influence from Greek mythology as you take control of Fenyx, a hero tasked with battling the monstrous Typhon in order to restore the power of the gods. Using these divine powers, you will battle a plethora of mythological monsters and explore the Isle of the Blessed in your quest to save the Greek pantheon.
Surprisingly, Gods & Monsters already has a release date, February 25, 2020. While this isn’t exactly right around the corner, it’s rather soon for a game revealed with no actual gameplay, which could mean more information may be coming sooner rather than later. Maybe during Nintendo’s E3 events? I guess we’ll see!
