3. Hyper Light Drifter (Wii U)

Estimated Release Date: Early 2015
If you love RPGs as much as I do, then Hyper Light Drifter should definitely be on your radar. Inspired by classics like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Hyper Light Drifter is aiming to pay homage to the 8-bit and 16-bit era of gaming and promises to be a game of epic proportions.
In the game, you play as one of the Drifters that were once apart of a civilization that is now in ruin. While the setting is definitely post-apocalyptic in nature, a society still exists in Hyper Light Drifter and it’s struggling to exist. Even the Drifter you control is suffering from an illness that threatens to kill him, leading him to search for the cure he needs. As revealed by the game’s creator, Alex Preston, in an interview with Polygon, the Drifter’s illness is a very personal matter for him because of his own struggles with heart disease:
I have a lot of health problems, like really serious life-threatening health problems throughout my life, and that is a deeper part of the story and the character himself and what he experiences. Those relationships come back to me as well.
Not only is Hyper Light Drifter a love letter to retro videogames, it’s poised to tell an incredibly interesting tale within its story. If the game can live up to the hype, Hyper Light Drifter could be one of the best indie games to hit the eShop this year.
I’m hoping for A Hat in Time on Wii U in 2015.
Since there’s no release date yet it’s a bit of a long shot, I’ll admit. But they’ve stopped just short of announcing it for Wii U so I have faith.
If the developer confirmed that it was coming to Wii U this year, it would have definitely made this list. I wish we could hear more about the game’s release!
Great list! Some were expecting, some forgotten, and a few were completely new to me. Definitely some games worth looking forward to though.
Thanks for putting this list together! I have a hard time keeping track of these games, and so many of these are definitely worth looking forward to.
Thanks! That’s why I put the list together in the first place. Nintendo has great indie support and I’m happy to help promote these games.
Affordable Space Adventures – how could I have forgotten about this game? It looks great, and should be out this year.
Good choice! That’s also another one I wanted to put on the list that I didn’t have room for, along with Hex Heroes, Elliot Quest, and Adventures of Pip. Even then, I’m sure I’m missing a few that I’ve been excited for!
Haha it was really hard to condense this list just to ten games.
