Can Women Write About Technology? And Other Useless Questions.
Suggested by Adam Sorice.
Last week, Molly Oswaks wrote an article over on Gizmodo criticising male trolls that assumed she’d performed sexual favours to get her job on the Gawker tech blog. She said they were rude, juvenile, and downright sexist (and rightly so), but this isn’t what we want to focus on today– instead, we want to show you a response to that article written by Gaby Dunn from the Thought Catalog.
In it, Gaby takes a much more analytical approach to Oswaks’ concerns and addresses them in a slightly more level-headed fashion. Here are a couple of our favourite quotes:
Being the token anything isn’t fun. Being the token lady or feminist is a specific brand of not fun that includes being called “angry” or “whiney” which until recently I thought were just emotions you can have as a human and not you know, just reserved for women. Minority opinions in fields dominated by one thing or the other are extra important. Do you really have to ask why?
~How exactly are you supposed to create change if you don’t have someone showing you why it’s wrong?
Quite right too. More importantly, though, what do you think about these two articles? Let us know in the comments!
