It’s hard to fault Nintendo fans for feeling a bit skittish about the SNES Classic Edition. After all, the system’s predecessor had a bit of a catastrophic release, and preorders for the SNES Classic have also been a bit of a mess. Thankfully, NOA president Reggie Fils-Amie continues to claim Nintendo fans needn’t worry.
In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Fils-Amie promised that stock would meet demand this time around, insisting that fans shouldn’t pay exorbitant eBay fees. “I would strongly urge you not to over-bid on an SNES Classic on any of the auction sites… You shouldn’t [have to] pay more than $79.99,” said Fils-Aime.
Fils-Amie also stated that the reason the NES Classic failed to meet demand is because Nintendo assumed it wouldn’t be that popular, since retro game consoles tend not to be a big draw. Reggie isn’t wrong on this; you can find quite a few different retro consoles at bargain stores gathering dust. Nintendo seemed to underestimate the appeal and nostalgia fans still have for the company’s back catalogue of games, however. Titles like Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda have much stronger drawing power than older Sega Genesis and Atari games.
Fans won’t have to wait long to see if the SNES Classic is easier to acquire. The system will release on September 29.
