Entertaining and cozy; simplistic art style
Very easy; too short of a campaign
In this cozy hidden object game you will traverse through Victorian elegance, Noir mystery, and Sci-fi wonder themed maps filled with mystery and of course hidden objects. Hidden Through Time 2: Discovery is definitely perfect for the upcoming fall season, very cozy and relaxing in gameplay. There is also a map editor feature so you can create your own worlds. While the campaign itself may be short, you can still play user generated maps through the online community as well as post your own creations for others. Created by Rogueside studios, there are two other titles in addition to this this cozy adventure; Hidden Through Time, and Hidden Through Time 2: Myths & Magic.
I had such a fun time playing this game! While it was mostly easy there were about three objects that had me stumped for a while. I really enjoy the cryptic hints and searching through the map finding other little surprises and mysteries that aren’t part of finding the hidden objects. All the maps are so intricate and detailed, not to mention it is all hand-drawn which I really appreciate and admire as an artist. I also love that there’s a loose narrative along with the maps, which doesn’t affect the gameplay but compliments it. As you’re scouring through the map you may notice things you wouldn’t have if not for the narrative, which makes the game a little more interesting and engaging.
Another feature I really enjoy is being able to open up the houses and other objects to search inside such as cabinets, drawers, boxes, etc. It adds another dimension to the game and a view into areas that you don’t always get to see in games. It has a nice isometric view to keep with the simplistic art style and ease of gameplay. There are a lot of details as I mentioned previously, and the interiors are no exception. Each building is filled with detail even if it doesn’t contain a hidden object on the list, there are a lot of interesting things to find.
As far as the map building feature I didn’t do a whole lot as in create an entire scene, but I did create a very small scene and assign a couple hidden objects to test the functionality. I have to say, it’s very straightforward and easy to do, I only got stumped with the placing of things such as windows and interior items, but I just need to read the tutorial more closely. Even after beating the campaign I could very well be entertained by creating my own scenes. It contains every single asset seen in the game, with some offering different customization options. This feature also makes you consider and appreciate how the developers assembled the game scenes, seeing how much time placing and assigning objects can take.
I have to say this game is very easy, the campaign able to be beaten within a few hours or so, at least for me. I also noticed when searching this game online, I run across the Myths & Magic version more than this version, possibly causing confusion to players. I feel as though the two could have been combined into a single title, with both modes as separate chapters. I don’t quite understand why a sequel would be separated into two when the original was a single title.
Overall, this is a perfect budget friendly cozy game if you’re looking for something simple and stress free. Let us know what you think in the comments!
