Sony’s Kaz Hirai has revealed that the company’s new handheld, codenamed NGP, hasn’t had a price (or battery life) attached to it yet because the system is still in prototype format. However, he also wants to assure interested buyers the ultimate price of all those internal components won’t “go off the deep end.”
But c’moonnnn, this is Sony! After PS3’s and PSP’s launch prices, will NGP’s price surprise us by being very competitive with 3DS, or will it feature an expected “Sony Premium”? Tell us your guess in the poll below.

$399 for the 3G-less one (if it exists). $449 for all the bells and whistles.
Yeah, I was worried there for a while, for the 3DS. It seemed to be packed out, top of its class, in tech and price. But it’s always the inferior system that leads the cycle. Nintendo seemed to be going too far.
Then the NGP shows up. I think the 3DS is going to do fine…
I’m guessing $300 for standard $400 for 3G. I’m there day one if there is a white one and that little deviants game they showed off.
xeacons: I’ve been using that lower-spec metric for a while now, and it’s held up pretty well…
Weak Gameboy vs strong GameGear/Lynx: Gameboy sells more
Weaker PS1 vs Stronger N64/Saturn: PS1 sells more
Weaker PS2 vs Stronger GC/Xbox: PS2 sells more
Weaker DS vs Stronger PSP: DS sells more
Weak Wii vs Strong PS3/360: Wii sells more
It’s been true with computers too…
Weak x86 vs strong Sparc/PowerPC: x86 sells more
Weaker Intel vs stronger AMD: Intel sells more
Weak Windows vs strong OS2/Linux/MacOS: Windows sells more
I was completely shocked when the superior blu-ray won over HD-DVD. I was _sure_ I had backed the wrong horse.
…Anyway getting back on topic, a $500+ NGP wouldn’t surprise me, but I’m more worried about the battery life and heat output of this thing than the price. I mean, the only other machine that can run MGS4 doubles as a space-heater for my basement. (Oh fine, I also have a slim now and they’re rather quiet/cool, but I had to make the joke.)
That is a pretty good rule to go by, until other factors come into play. Look at Intel now…. MUCH more powerful and even more expensive but they are still selling more than AMD. I wouldn’t take your rule into account for processors. AMD used to sell better due to their acknowledgment of gamers, power users and hackers (overclockers). Intel never wanted to open up their CPUs. Now, Intel DOES open their CPUs up. Even the lower end editions which basically turn into higher end editions once overclocked.
That being said, than people should have bought the Neo Geo Pocket Color instead of the Game Boy Advance.
It really boils down to GAMES, not power.
That has always been the way it is: The system with the most games that appeal to the widest audience… wins.
