The Metroid series is one of Nintendo’s oldest and most storied properties, recently celebrating the 30th anniversary of its seminal debut on NES. Unlike some of Nintendo’s other marquee franchises, however, the series has been effectively dormant since its controversial Wii installment, Metroid: Other M, and the only new entry on the horizon, Metroid Prime: Federation Force (which launches in North America on Friday, August 19), cannot even be considered a proper Metroid title, placing players not in the role of series heroine Samus Aran but a cadre of faceless Federation troopers as they cooperate to complete various missions across the star system.
Given the dearth of Metroid titles lately, Federation Force was met with immediate backlash, particularly by fans who have been waiting six years for a new installment in the franchise. With all the controversy surrounding the title, we’d like to know where you stand regarding Federation Force. Do you think it’ll be a fun (if unorthodox) cooperative adventure, or have you also written it off because it’s not a true Metroid title? I think a bite-sized, mission-segmented Metroid could actually work very well if it was done correctly. But doing it correctly would mean not cutting out the exploration, upgrades, and isolation. Hunters came close. Closer, anyway.
I suspect a game exploring the Metroid universe’s federation and its troops could be great too. What these bobblehead cartoon people in huge metallic teddy bears have to do with anything, I don’t know.
