Believe it or not, it’s been six years since the release of New Super Mario Bros. on DS. It might not seem like it given that every man and his Yoshi is getting their dungarees in a twist over the two New Super Mario Bros. titles being released this year, but back then it was the first original side-scrolling Mario game since Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins in 1992– and everyone went completely nuts for it. It was so popular that it even spawned a home console follow-up in the form of New Super Mario Bros. Wii three years later, and to date it’s sold over 29 million units, making it the best-selling DS game of all time.
Yet fast-forward to the present day and it seems like several fans have fallen out of love with the NSMB style of gaming. “It’s too samey!” they cry. “We’re all Mario-ed out!” “JUST GIVE ME GALAXY ON A HANDHELD, MIYAMOTO!” That sort of thing.
Okay, so maybe releasing New Super Mario Bros. 2 and New Super Mario Bros. U within mere months of each other wasn’t the best idea in the world (especially since the delightful Super Mario 3D Land was only released late last November), but considering New Super Mario Bros. 2 is going to be the first new NSMB entry in three years, isn’t it about time we had a new one? Moreover, with its emphasis on coin-collecting and speed-running, it also looks set to offer an altogether different Mario experience from what we’ve played before– NSMB or otherwise– so we want to know what you think about its imminent release.
Has Mario finally lost his side-scrolling charm, or have these past few years not gone fast enough? Let us know in the comments below! (and be sure to tell us whether you’re planning on getting the game at retail or via eShop as a digital download)

Campaign Co-Op
Portable co-op is really the main reason I’m getting it. There are surprisingly few 3DS games that let you play through a campaign/story mode cooperatively with another player. Heroes of Ruin is the only other game, that I can think of right now, that does this.
There may or may not have been some exchange of money at my local video game store for the pre-ordering of said Mario game, but you can’t prove anything! :P
