When then 15-year-old rabbidluigi, a YouTuber known for his gaming top ten videos and Let’s Plays, started his channel seven years ago, he chose his moniker by combining the names of two video game characters he liked, in part due to the fact that their respective franchises weren’t at all connected.
Fast-forward to 2017, just before this year’s E3 when Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle was leaked and rabbidluigi’s social media was hit with a wave of endless jokes. When rabbidluigi made his first video discussing the game, it reached over 190,000 views — which is about 100,000 more views than his most-viewed top 5 and top 10 videos.
Rabbidluigi’s subscribers weren’t the only fans of his sudden connection to Mario + Rabbids, as he found himself contacted by both Nintendo and Ubisoft, the latter of which invited him to their studio in Paris to play the game at a marketing event.
Since Mario + Rabbids’ release, rabbidluigi has reviewed it on his channel and of course made mention of the coincidental connection between his name and the game, but he doesn’t want his channel to “be defined” by it and will be happy once the joke fades away. However, for now he says he’s “just rolling with it” and will enjoy the ride “while it’s relevant.”
