Thursday May 4th, New York’s Strong National Museum of Play announced that Wii Sports was officially inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame. Games that are entered are recognized as having “enjoyed popularity over a sustained period and have exerted influence on the video game industry or on popular culture and society in general.”

Other inductees for 2023 include The Last of Us, Barbie Fashion Designer, and Computer Space. These titles are on permanent display near the museum’s eGameRevolution exhibit. These four are now among 40 titles that have been inducted since the establishment of the World Video Game Hall of Fame in 2015.

Wii Sports was released in 2006 as a bundle with Wii consoles. Nintendo had redefined the way video games could be played, with this title relying on motion sensitive remotes as the controllers. It became a phenomenon among various ages and cultures and encouraged families to play together. Even senior living centers got in on the fun, hosting bowling tournaments for their residents.

Its influence made gamers out of so many individuals who never considered playing video games. Nintendo did this intentionally, showcasing a wider audience for their marketing campaign. This title ultimately resulted in Nintendo selling more than 100 million Wii consoles, outselling even Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3.

For being a simple game that took a unique take on basic sports, Wii Sports is a game for friends and families of all ages to come together and play. It is one of the best selling video games of all time and definitely earned its place in the World Video Game Hall of Fame.
