Kirby’s been getting a lot of love for his latest adventure, Kirby and the Forgotten Land (which we’ve been really loving, too), but another Kirby title is getting some attention lately, as well — one that, unfortunately, was never actually released.
Known only as Kirby for Nintendo GameCube, this entry into the mainline Kirby franchise was announced in 2004, a year after the release of Kirby Air Ride (Kirby’s only game on the GameCube). HAL had been working on a new Kirby title since 2000, following the release of Kirby and the Crystal Shards on Nintendo 64; HAL and Nintendo were never able to achieve what they wanted from the game, so it went unreleased, never to see the light of day.
That is, until decades later, when fans would dig up footage and post it on social media.
Twitter user @ObscureKirby recently posted nine seconds of newly-rediscovered footage of Kirby for Nintendo GameCube, which YouTube user Foulowe59 has uploaded to their channel:
In an interview conducted around the time of the release of Kirby’s Return to Dream Land on Wii, the late Satoru Iwata sat down with some of the team at HAL to discuss what they called the three lost Kirby games. Given the footage seen in this clip, particularly the first couple of seconds which seem to show Kirby stacked on top of other characters, this appears to be the game that they described as “being based on the concept of four-person simultaneous gameplay.”
