Just a few years ago, VR was the talk of the video game industry. Within a short period, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR all hit the market to a mixed assortment of results. Some experiences seemed to light the way for the future while others needed to go back to the drawing board. Two fairly universal issues were the relatively high prices and the complexity of each system’s setups, often requiring specific controllers, cameras, or sensors to get everything running. Recently, Nintendo announced a much simpler, and cheaper, VR experiment in the form of Labo VR, and you’ll soon have the chance to check it out free of charge.
Best Buy stores around the United States will be hosting demo events on April 14 from 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM local time. You’ll be able to try a number of the different VR experiences included with the Nintendo Labo VR Kit which will retail for $79.99 when it launches April 12. You can find participating stores through Best Buy’s site.
While the many cardboard contraptions that come with the VR kit are interesting, I imagine many gamers are more interested in seeing how the recently announced VR updates for Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild will play. It sounds like these Best Buy events are focused on the former, but hopefully it will at least help put into perspective whether or not Nintendo has overcome the many obstacles that make developing a quality VR experience so difficult.
