Pokémon GO players have been clamoring for PVP battles since the game launched back in 2016 and while the social and real-world aspects of the game have been incredibly enjoyable for many, Pokémon just doesn’t feel like Pokémon without battles. While battling was promised to arrive down the line, Niantic has finally confirmed that Trainer Battles are, indeed, finally coming to the game.
The developer made the announcement via a series of teasing tweets:

Since the confirmation, Niantic announced that there will in fact be three different Trainer Battle leagues: Great, Ultra, and Master. Trainers must choose a league before going into battle, and each league will have different maximum Pokemon CP limits. The Great League will have a limit of 1500 CP per Pokemon, the Ultra League’s CP limit will be 2500 per Pokemon, and the Master League will have no CP limit.
A high CP will be advantageous in the Master League, but strategy will be more important in the Great and Ultra Leagues, given the CP limits. Niantic also elaborated on the philosophy that went into developing the Trainer Battle leagues:
Developer note: When designing Trainer Battles, we wanted to create an experience that everyone can enjoy and ensure that different kinds of Pokémon can show their strengths! With Leagues in Trainer Battles, we hope to create a system that’s accessible to many Trainers. 🙂
