Whether it’s the plethora of retro-inspired indie games or the actual arcade ports from big publishers, Nintendo included, Switch has proven to be an exceptional system for those looking for old-school gameplay experiences. Soon, gamers with preferences going back decades will have yet another option to whet their appetites. Toki, a lesser known arcade title from 1989, is getting a significantly updated version on Switch.
In the game, players assume the role of the titular warrior who sets out to save his love, Miho, from an evil wizard and demon who also happened to turn Toki into a chimp. While the gameplay remains an action-platformer like the original, the visuals have been completely redone with hand-drawn assets while the music has received similar modernization. The game also has a new, less challenging difficulty mode for those who don’t want to relive the quarter-devouring difficulty common at the time of Toki’s initial release.
For those especially keen on revisiting Toki, a special Retrollector Edition is also being offered. This version includes an original comic book, stickers, art prints, and an arcade cabinet shaped Switch stand to further sell the whole arcade revival concept. Unlike Nyko’s upcoming offering, this one seems to be made out of plastic. The game and its Retrollector’s Edition will arrive November 22.
