Following the release of Switch’s 5.0 update on March 12, it seems that some users of third party docks have been losing save game data and, more worryingly, are no longer to turn their consoles on at all.
It was reported last year that Nyko’s portable docking kit can (in at least one confirmed instance) damage the USB-C port on the Switch. However, since the latest firmware update, some users who have docked the Switch with a Nyko Switch dock and FastSnail docking kit have reported seeing error messages and, in some cases, that their console stopped turning on altogether.
According to Kotaku, Nintendo is aware of the issue and has offered to repair damaged units if they are under warranty. However, it is apparently unlikely that any data could be recovered in the process. Meanwhile, a spokesperson from Nyko has told Kotaku that they are:
“aware of the issue some Portable Docking Kit owners are facing after updating the firmware on their Nintendo Switch to version 5.0. Though further testing is still required to determine the exact root cause of the problem, we believe it is related to the way the Switch handles AV output for an external TV/monitor while the console is docked on the Portable Docking Kit.”
Nintendo has since also issued a statement to Kotaku recommending that users only buy officially licensed Switch products as “unlicensed products and accessories do not undergo Nintendo’s testing and evaluation process” and may cause issues.
