Sadly, The Game Awards are mired in a bit of controversy this year as it has come to light that the event’s owner, Geoff Keighley, is allegedly petitioning to have the ceremony’s title of “game awards” patented. This hasn’t rubbed everyone well, as some think it’s a bit exclusionary of other outlets and people that might want to host their own, similar celebrations.
Another element stuck in some people’s craw is the notion that remakes, remasters, DLC, and the like, are eligible for any of the awards categories at The Game Awards. Some are concerned that such an inclusion will dilute the quality threshold for the awards, while others are frustrated that DLC and other games of this ilk would have likely snagged some awards if this was the policy from the outset.
Alas, not everything can be perfect, and while it’s disappointing that Nintendo doesn’t have any games in the running for the big-time awards, there is still a chance for the company to bring home some hardware. The Game Awards will air on December 12, 2024. What are your predictions for The Game Awards this year? Tell us down in the comments and on social media!
