This morning, Nintendo held a livestream for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate focused on Terry Bogard, the fourth new fighter to join the game as DLC. Masahiro Sakurai was once again on-hand to deliver the news, revealing a ton of new details. Terry’s move set is a bit unique, reflecting his fighting game roots. His Final Smash is Triple Geyser. When it connects, Terry also uses Power Dunk and Buster Wolf.
Every DLC fighter has been accompanied by a new stage, and Terry is no exception. His stage is King of Fighters Stadium, and it plays a bit differently than other Smash arenas. Most notably, the stage is walled off, to give it a similar play style to classic 2D fighting games. Finally, 20 classic SNK characters will appear in the background, and their appearance will change based on the track playing.
Speaking of music, this time around, players will have a whopping 50 tracks to choose from! The tracks aren’t just from the Fatal Fury franchise, but rather the entire history of SNK. According to Sakurai, the 50 tracks were submitted to SNK under the assumption that the publisher would send back a smaller list of approved tracks, but that was not the case!
Finally, a number of Mii Fighter costumes were also revealed. Costumes based on Samurai Shodown (Nakoruru), Virtua Fighter (Akira and Jacky), Art of Fighting (Ryo Sakazaki) and King of Fighters (Iori Yagami) will also be available today. Each costume will cost 75 cents.
While some fans hoped in vain for a new character reveal, there was something quite nice about seeing so much time devoted to SNK. Some had questioned the relevance of Terry Bogard in a game filled with so many other major video game icons, but Sakurai worked overtime to show why Terry, and SNK, deserved it.
