As of April 20, 650+ Target stores in the United States are celebrating the April 28 launch of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with a special in-store shopping experience that’s sure to encourage Nintendo and Mario Kart fans to make a Target run.
Scott Nygaard, senior vice president, Merchandising, Target, had the following to say about the company’s Mario Kart extravaganza: “Experience counts —- it’s what keeps guests coming in and coming back to our stores. So we’re delivering the fun like only Target can, giving generations of Mario fans a shopping trip they won’t soon forget.”
The Nintendo palooza begins outside the stores, where the normally red bollards (those giant red spheres that are actually meant to stop stray cars) will be fitted with covers bearing Mario and Luigi’s faces.
As you approach the doors leading into the store, you’ll see Lakitu on the glass urging you to step on it and come on in, with a checkered pattern on the floor meant to replicate a starting line. Even better, motion sensors will begin flashing lights and playing Mario’s theme song as you pass through the doors.
In a first for Target, the company has decked out its shopping carts — which have been dubbed “Super Target Karts” — with kart-inspired designs based on Mario, Luigi, and Peach’s color schemes. According to Target, “an assortment of Mario and Nintendo-related products” will be set around the store, but whether that means new and/or exclusive products or preexisting merchandise was not specified.
This Mario Kart-dedicated shopping experience is only for a limited time, so head to your local Target if you want to check it out for yourself!
