Version 14.1.2 of the Nintendo Switch firmware has been out since earlier this month. In an interesting twist, this firmware has been subtly revised via a rebootless update. Meaning, without having to reboot the console, Nintendo has refreshed the current operating system. The reason? To refresh the system’s internal “bad words” list.

Dataminer OatmealDome made the reveal regarding this change to Version 14.1.2. Here’s the synopsis as detailed by Nintendo Life:

[Nintendo Switch Firmware Update] Nintendo has released a “rebootless” update for 14.1.2.

The only changes are to the bad words list. A large amount of swears, racial slurs, words of a sexual nature, references to terrorist organizations, and more were added to all languages.

Rebootless firmware updates are silently installed, do not increment the version number (still 14.1.2), and do not require rebooting the system after installation.

The last rebootless firmware update was released on Dec 11, 2020 for 11.0.1. It also updated the bad words list.

Users don’t have to do anything on their end in order to receive this update. Are you glad to see Nintendo keeping its online interactions as family-friendly as possible? Tell us down in the comments!
