Last week, Nintendo updated Switch to version 4.00 and touted how it added the ability to record and save gameplay clips as well as included support for wireless headphones. However, the update included an extra feature Nintendo chose not to publicize — support for GameCube controllers.

Those who purchased the GameCube controller adapter for Wii U can plug it into the Switch dock’s USB ports and then sync the controllers from the system’s settings menu. Furthermore, the retro controllers function for every game, however the fact it has fewer buttons than dual Joy-Cons or a Pro Controller means it won’t be very practical for all games.

Of course, this surprise addition raises a few questions, most important of which is what Nintendo has planned for this feature and why they chose to keep it under wraps. No doubt many gamers are now hoping for GameCube Virtual Console titles or a new Smash Bros. title. Hopefully we’ll find out sooner than later.
