Retro gaming enthusiasts will have to go without Virtual Console for the foreseeable future following the launch of Switch on March 3. The classic gaming service has become a mainstay of Nintendo’s from the days of Wii to now, but sadly the company has decided to hold back on it for the time being. The official word from the Big N is that it “will share more information in the future.” That’s not much to go off of and it also isn’t particularly satisfying seeing one of the biggest elephants in the room regarding Switch continues to not be addressed.
Up to now there have only been rumors about the nature of Virtual Console on Switch. The promise of GameCube games has been floating around for eons, and many have wondered how much fans can expect to pay (if anything) for titles they’ve purchases several times now across Wii, 3DS, and Wii U. All pressing questions for consumers, questions that won’t be answered any time soon, apparently. Whether or not this will be impacting anyone’s decision to purchase a Switch at launch remains to be seen.
Thankfully, Yacht Club Games and multiple other indie developers will be stepping in to fill the gap with a variety of games for fans to play. Yacht Club’s Shovel Knight will be dropping on Switch’s launch day along with its two expansions: Specter of Torment and the all-new Treasure Trove. Shine’en’s Fast RMX will also be landing on the same day, meaning March 3 is going to be a very busy day for gamers with or without Virtual Console! Nintendo will be showcasing that trio of games along with the over 60 (and counting) other indie titles coming to Switch over the next year in a special “Nindies Showcase” broadcast this Tuesday, February 28, at 9 AM PST.
It’s perhaps not the best tradeoff for Virtual Console’s absence, but it’s exciting nonetheless to get a glimpse of all the different indie titles heading to Switch. Which games are you looking forward to? Are you disappointed with the loss of Virtual Console at Switch’s launch? Tell us in the comments!
