After the failure of Wii U, pundits were quick to dismiss Nintendo. While the system had a number of unsung hits, confidence in the publisher seemed to be at an all-time low. Fortunately, Switch has proven far more successful than its predecessor. In fact, the handheld hybrid is the fastest selling system of this console generation, according to the NPD group.
In the US, Switch has sold 8.7 million units since its release in March of 2017, outpacing all other current generation consoles at this point in their lifespan. Those numbers are no doubt influenced by the system’s software lineup. Through November, Nintendo is the year’s leading publisher in software sales, thanks to games like Pokémon: Let’s Go and evergreen titles like Super Mario Odyssey and Splatoon 2. The publisher will likely retain that title as Nintendo’s internal numbers show Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at more than 3 million units sold in just 11 days, making it the franchise’s fastest selling game.
It’s all good news for Nintendo at this point, as Switch approaches the end of its second year on the market. With first party releases like Animal Crossing, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and a new Pokémon game on the horizon, 2019 should prove to be another exciting year for owners of Nintendo Switch.
