The success of Switch cannot be overstated. After the dismal-selling Wii U, Nintendo needed a big win to convince investors (and fans) that the company could still release a winning console. Nintendo did just that, and the most recent projections have Switch surpassing Wii U’s lifetime sales very soon.

The Wii U just managed to sell 13.6 million units since its release in 2012. Nintendo is projected to sell 14 million this year. In Japan, the financial year begins at the start of April. Since Nintendo sold 2.74 million Switch units in March of 2017, the company should hit 16.74 million Switch units sold by April 2018. That’s an incredible feat, all things considered!

The Switch’s success has proven to be a huge boon for developers that jumped on the bandwagon early; the handheld hybrid has seen brisk digital sales, with many indie developers reporting stronger interest on Switch than any other platform. Frankly, publishers that took a wait-and-see approach now seem to be scrambling to make up for lost time. If sales continue at this pace, and Nintendo continues to release strong exclusive titles like Super Mario Odyssey, Switch will end up as one of the company’s greatest success stories.
