For a long time, Street Fighter II held the crown as the top-selling fighting game of all-time. Considering the fact that the game more or less made the whole genre popular, this fact should come as little surprise. However, all reigns must end eventually, and Street Fighter II has finally met its match in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Nintendo recently updated its financial information including sales figures for Switch and its plethora of popular titles. The numbers put the latest entry in Nintendo’s popular fighting franchise at lifetime sales of 15.71 million, topping Street Fighter II’s 15.5 million. Of course, the holiday season is coming up, so we can probably only expect that advantage to grow as more gamers get their hands on Switch systems and look to grow their library.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate isn’t Nintendo’s only hit game, so the latest sales figures also represented good news for other titles. New games like Super Mario Maker 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening have both topped 3 million copies sold, while older hits like Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continue to sell well, with the latter approaching the 20 million mark.
