This morning, the latest Nintendo Direct presentation shed more light on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Plenty of new information was provided, including a handful of new fighters!
Simon Belmont, the protagonist from several entries in Konami’s Castlevania franchise, is the latest third party character to join the game’s roster. Unsurprisingly, the Castlevania franchise is getting a lot more support outside of the character’s presence! Dracula’s Castle is a playable stage, bringing with it a number of enemies and obstacles from the series.
The role of music got a very big boost in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, but Ultimate will expand on it even further. The game will boast 34 music tracks from the Castlevania franchise, including classic songs and remixes. This was revealed alongside news that Ultimate will have 900 music tracks in total. Players that like to listen to gaming music on the go will be happy to know that the title will allow them to turn off the screen while still using their Switch as a portable music player!
Simon Belmont is also joined by a trio of Echo Fighters: Richter Belmont (an Echo of Simon), Dark Samus and Chrom. Customization fans will be happy to know that Echo Fighters can appear on the character select screen individually, or stacked on the original character, depending on player preference!
Playable characters are the most exciting part of any Super Smash Bros. entry, but the latest assist trophies unveiled today should also please Nintendo fans. Alucard, Shovel Knight, Knuckles, Krystal, Kapp’n, Zero and the Moon from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask will all appear in the game. Rathalos from the Monster Hunter franchise will pull double duty in Ultimate as both a boss in the game and as an assist trophy. A number of new Pokémon will also be included in the game’s Poké Balls, including Alolan Exeggutor, Alolan Vulpix, Abra, Mimikyu, Pyukumuku, Marshadow, Solgaleo, Lunala and Ditto, who transforms into a copy of the player that released it.
Stages also got a bit of attention, as well. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will have 103 stages to choose from, including returning stages and brand-new ones, like the newly announced New Donk City Hall. Stages that initially appeared on N64 can also appear in their original form. Stage Morph has been added, allowing players to select two stages at once. Midway through the match, the current stage will morph into a different one!
The presentation concluded with the announcement of a long requested playable character: King K. Rool! Donkey Kong’s longtime foe will have his own stage, which seems to take cues from Donkey Kong 64. Nintendo has confirmed that all of today’s newly announced fighters and Echo Fighters will all have their own Amiibo releases.
All in all, today’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct was a very impressive showing for the game. What did you think of the presentation? Let us know in the comments below!

K. Rool! My dream character! I can’t way to see how he plays.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is earning that name. They really do seem to be adding in a lot of characters that people have requested for a while. I bet the ballot was a good road map to this game for the development team.
This game is going to get its hooks in me. I know it.
Back when Smash came out for Wii U & 3DS simultaneously, you could register them both on Club Nintendo to receive an excellent 2-Disc Smash Soundtrack. It was a great bonus!
Smash Ultimate will have 900 music tracks!? Where can I pre-order the soundtrack? Lol.
Glad to see Simon made the cut.
