While there are many fans who cringe at the thought of Super Mario being on any piece of hardware that isn’t Nintendo-made, the famous plumber nonetheless caught the attention of quite a few people when he made his iOS debut on December 15. 2.8 million people, to be exact; that’s the number of folks who went onto the App Store to get hold of Super Mario Run this past Thursday. This debut is on pace to be the largest of anything on Apple’s digital marketplace, which is no small feat, indeed.

Though not a traditional Super Mario platformer, Super Mario Run still boasts enough of the mustachioed one’s signature gameplay that players are taking note in droves. While only time will tell how much longevity Run will have, for now it’s a major hit and a positive sign for Nintendo and its ongoing mobile initiative. An Android version will be hitting some time in 2017 and will likely only further this success story.

Sounds like the always-online DRM is causing a lot of woes for many people. A $10 app that refuses to run sometimes is not acceptable.
I just hope Nintendo doesn’t ever try to pull this nonsense with their real games. Tech culture today is so focused on locking things down and treating customers like criminals that it’s a real danger.
