Chihiro Fujioka, the director for the original Super Mario RPG, has stated that he won’t be returning for the remake, which was announced during June’s Nintendo Directs. Despite not being involved in the development process, Fujioka is looking forward to the remake.
Square Enix, known as Square at the time, developed the original Super Mario RPG for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1996. The game followed the adventures of Mario, Bowser, and Peach, who embarked on a quest to restore the Star Road, a magical pathway that granted wishes.
Fujioka replied to a fan’s comment, “I am not involved in the remake, but I am very surprised and pleased with the news.”

Fujioka’s positive outlook adds to the anticipation surrounding the Super Mario RPG remake. Fans eagerly await further updates, looking forward to re-experiencing the magic of the original game. Nintendo is also bringing back at least one person from the original team; game composer Yoko Shimomura has announced she will return.
