Super Mario Maker 2 surprised everyone with the news that it would be incorporating online play for the first time in the series’ history. While it’s certainly good news for those who would like to play with others beyond the confines of their homes, there’s a bit of a caveat that’s just been revealed by Nintendo: players won’t be able to compete online with their friends. That’s right, only random players will be able to connect in both the online co-op and versus modes!
If that seems strange, there’s actually a really good reason for this, as it’s a security measure to prevent people from cheating online. Anyone who’s played Super Smash Bros. online has likely come across “griefers,” or people who work together to boost one another’s playing stats, maliciously impede other players, and overall just cause problems for everyone who’s trying to have a good time. In order to keep competition and gameplay in Super Mario Maker 2’s online modes as fair as possible, Nintendo has opted to cut these opportunistic players off at the knees.
Note that those who want to play with friends can still do so via local wireless or on a single Switch console. Does this impact your decision to buy Super Mario Maker 2? Share your thoughts below and on social media!
