A long time ago, back in the forgotten era known as the early 90s, side-scrolling beat-em-ups were among gaming’s most popular genres and Sega’s systems played host to one of the most celebrated series, Streets of Rage. The original game was released in 1991 before getting two sequels with the latest, Streets of Rage 3, getting released in 1994; since then, the franchise has been dormant.
After 24 years, we can now report a new sequel is in development. Streets of Rage 4 is being developed by Lizardcube, the team behind the well-received Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap remake, and features some great looking hand drawn visuals that are leaning heavy on the retro charm of the era. While not much has been specifically stated about the gameplay, the developers are promising to honor and build upon the foundations of the genre. In the meantime, check out the stylized announcement trailer.
Currently, Streets of Rage 4 has no confirmed consoles or release date, but given the history of all the involved parties, a Switch version seems highly likely. Be sure to stay on the lookout for more information in the future.
