While the 16-bit era was, by many people’s opinion, a golden age for JRPGs, it’s easy to forget that a lot of titles later considered classics took their sweet time to get releases outside of Japan. Star Ocean might not exist in the same tier as Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI, but it was still a notable title that kicked off a lasting franchise. And it did that without ever getting an American or European release in its original form!
The rest of the world finally got to get their hands on the adventure in 2008 in the form of a PSP remake entitled Star Ocean: First Departure. Now, more than a decade later, even more people will get a chance to try the game thanks to an upcoming remaster for Nintendo Switch. This time around, the title is getting one extra letter: Star Ocean: First Departure R.

Square Enix has yet to elaborate much on this version, like what will set it apart from the PSP original, when it will be released, and how much it will cost. In other words, you’ll have to stay tuned for more information.
