Fans of Japanese RPGs didn’t have to wait long to experience their favorite genre on Switch thanks to I am Setsuna, a retro inspired game from Square Enix and Tokyo RPG Factory that launched alongside the console in March. While the game didn’t quite live up to the legacy of the classics that inspired it, it was a solid game that confidently filled its niche. Today, both companies confirmed they are partnering up to release a follow-up.
The new game is called Lost Sphear, and based on early details, it looks like the developers will look to continue where they left off in delivering a modern take on classic RPG principles. Like I am Setsuna, Lost Sphear will feature a Chrono Trigger inspired battle system where exploration and battles transition seamlessly from one to the other and character and enemy placement plays a major role in landing area-of-effect attacks. Also, like its predecessor, the world is rendered with 3D visuals as viewed through overhead and isometric camera angles. The plot, on the other hand, looks to be entirely new as players assume the role of Kanata, a young boy tasked with saving a world that is literally disappearing around him.
As you can see from the trailer, development and localization are well underway and while a specific release date has yet to be announced, Square Enix has given a release window of early 2018.
