After months of negative feedback and a rather blatant marketing push from Nintendo and Microsoft, Sony has finally decided to allow cross-play between Fortnite players on PS4 with those who own Switch and Xbox One. The controversy started at this year’s E3, when PS4 owners were disappointed to discover that purchases they made in Fortnite were landlocked to that particular system.

An open beta will begin today for PS4 owners, with the promise that Sony “has identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content.” Right now, this is apparently only for Fortnite, but that particular bit seems to indicate that the company is open for cross-play with other third party titles, such as Minecraft and Rocket League. The move would certainly help give these games further longevity online!

The title has only been available on Switch for a few months, but Nintendo has wasted little time capitalizing on the popularity of Fortnite. A Switch Fortnite themed bundle that includes in-game currency and the Double Helix Set will release October 5.
