When John Fowler, director of Sonic the Hedgehog, announced that Sonic would be redesigned following the overwhelming amount of backlash and criticism the first trailer received, fans breathed a sigh of relief — but also expressed some concern.
The movie was originally slated for a November 2019 release. Could the VFX artists really complete a total redesign of Sonic in such a short amount of time? Well, in a recent tweet, Fowler has now confirmed that the film is being pushed back to a Valentine’s Day 2020 release date.

One of the number of things that were wrong with Sonic’s original movie design was his lack of gloves, but a gloved hand that looks an awful lot like Sonic’s is seen holding the sign with the new release date. Maybe his shoes will be more true to the games following his redesign, as well? Maybe he’ll get his unieye and lose the weird teeth?
What’s certain is that Paramount can’t afford (literally) to screw this up a second time, so let’s hope that the design team take more cues from the Sonic games in their next pass at the character.
