A glitch in the system is being blamed.

SNES Classic Edition is seemingly shaping up to be just as elusive as its predecessor. As such, fans leaped at the chance to reserve the retro console when Walmart began offering online pre-orders. The competition was fierce, but the lucky few who were successful in their endeavors rejoiced and reveled in their luck.

Sadly, Walmart has come to rain on the proverbial parade.

The pre-orders that were offered on the box store’s website were, according to an email sent to consumers by Walmart, the result of a glitch. Here’s a piece of the email sent:

“Unfortunately, due to a technical glitch, the Super Nintendo Classic Edition was mistakenly made available last Friday evening ahead of the official release date. We, regrettably, will have to cancel this item on your order. We know that this is incredibly disappointing to you, and we’re truly sorry for this mistake.”

There has been no word from Nintendo or Walmart if SNES Classic Edition will be made available for pre-order. It’s truly regrettable that fans will seemingly have to scramble to find the system when it launches on September 29 for $79.99. Indeed, it’s likely that consumers will likely be forced to spend much more than the MSRP for SNES Classic on the secondary market if they want to get hold of one.

Were you one of the customers impacted by Walmart’s pre-order cancellation? Do you think it will be hard to find an SNES Classic when it launches this Fall? Sound off in the comments!
