As long as there have been Smash Bros. games, there have been rumors swirling about the next entry in the series. Well, rumors are already starting to emerge about a possible sequel on Switch, even though one hasn’t been announced yet.
Emily Rogers, who has been the source of numerous rumors in the past (both true and, occasionally, off the mark), claims that a new Smash Bros. game will be announced for Switch later this year. It will also apparently be released this year as well. Rogers says that this game will include both new content and reworked Wii U and 3DS content, but that she isn’t sure how Nintendo will be branding the game: either as a brand new sequel or as a ‘deluxe’ edition of Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS.
Of course, with the sheer amount of DLC that Smash Bros. received on Wii U and 3DS, it remains to be seen how much more content Nintendo would (and could) pack into any deluxe version of the game.
Meanwhile, if Nintendo were planning on announcing a brand-new entry on Switch, it seems unlikely that there would be so little time between its announcement and release — especially given the traditional wait that we have had to endure for Smash Bros. games.
