Microsoft is on a bit of a crusade. The software and hardware giant is dreaming of an all-digital future where the console is a relic of the past and people game from anything with an Internet connection. At least, that’s what Microsoft is hoping for as it continues to push for its Game Pass service to move beyond the Xbox and Windows ecosystems. The company has once again repeated its desire to spread Game Pass as far and wide as possible.
Speaking at the Wells Fargo TMT Summit, Xbox CFO Tim Stuart reiterated the company’s desire to get Game Pass on “every screen.” Stuart said, “That means smart TVs, that means mobile devices, that means what we would have thought of as competitors in the past like PlayStation and Nintendo.” Stuart admits that the strategy might seem odd, but it’s evident that Microsoft sees greater value in disseminating its software and subscription services across anything that can run it versus the typical model of dedicated hardware that would run the company’s games.
This isn’t the first time that an Xbox employee has mentioned Nintendo; just this past September leaked emails from within Microsoft revealed that the company wanted to buy Nintendo outright and fold it into the Xbox family of developers. That has not (and hopefully will never) materialized, but it would seem that Xbox has some pretty long term, ambitious goals for the future of video games.
