SEGA president Shuji Utsumi has admitted that last year’s 2D game Sonic Superstars was a “disappointment” compared to other recent releases of the franchise.
The game generated both positive and negative reviews from fans, ultimately failing to meet SEGA’s sales expectations. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, president Utsumi released a statement about the failure of Sonic Superstars as well as how excellent the release of Sonic X Shadow Generations did in comparison.
“We were trying to do something creative with Sonic Frontiers. With Sonic Superstars it turned out to be a disappointment, in terms of the outcome compared to what we delivered. This time we have Sonic X Shadow Generations and the next Sonic movie, so we’re pushing things in the transmedia direction – movies and games working in harmony to make things bigger. But the core [of the experience] is the game. The game needs to be very good or else there is no transmedia effect.
The Sonic X Shadow Generations game is actually very good, I would say awesome, action-wise. But starting next year, it’s going to be the next level, as you will just see at TGA.”
Sonic Superstars was first released in October 2023 as an intentional return to the classic Genesis style of the Sonic franchise. The game focused on features such as speed, four-player co-operative play, new powers, and obstacles associated with the Chaos Emeralds. The game even re-introduced an old character, Fang the Hunter. The game was welcomed with mixed receptions from players upon release. There were also questions about the game not having as much attention as expected due to it being launched at the same time as Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
