You might recall that it was announced last October that online play would be coming to a close for the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS family of consoles. At the time, it was known that the services would be shuttered in April of 2024, but the actual date wasn’t revealed. Now, we know exactly when fans will no longer be able to play online with either system: 04.08.24 at 4 PM PST.
Here’s the announcement on Nintendo of America’s support site:
Thank you very much for supporting our products.
At 4pm PDT on April 8, 2024, online play and other functionality that uses online communication will end for Nintendo 3DS* and Wii U software. This also includes online co-operative play, internet rankings, and data distribution.

Please note that if an event occurs that would make it difficult to continue online services for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software, we may have to discontinue services earlier than planned.
We sincerely thank players for using the online services of Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software over a long period of time and apologize for any inconvenience.
* This includes software exclusive to New Nintendo 3DS.
Nintendo also made an announcement regarding the merger of any remaining funds from a 3DS and/or Wii U Nintendo Network ID to a Nintendo Account. In brief, those funds can be swapped over and used for purchases on a Nintendo Switch, but the transfer must happen prior to March 11, 2024 at 10 PM PST. Nintendo advises making the transfer regardless of whether or not you own a Switch, as the funds will remain there in perpetuity (well, until the service for Switch eventually, presumably ends, too).
