Another classic video game magazine is gone.

Game Informer is gone. In virtually every sense of the word, to boot. The website isn’t shut down, but traveling to almost any of its links yields a variation of the following:

The Game Informer X account has already been shuttered, but before it went down, here’s what was posted:

If you try navigating to Game Informer’s X account, you find this:

It’s truly a sad day seeing another vestige of the video game industry’s rich publication history resigned to the past. The magazine began life as an in-house production of FuncoLand, which was a video game retailer similar to GameStop (OG Bay Area gamers might remember the FuncoLand that used to be in Southland). In 2000, GameStop bought up FuncoLand and began publishing duties for the magazine.

It wasn’t a GameStop visit without being asked by the worker behind the counter if you wanted to get the PowerUp Pro Membership, which in turn netted you a subscription to Game Informer. However, things changed recently when the magazine became a standalone purchase in-store and the subscription service itself was altered. It’s unclear exactly why Game Informer was closed down, but according to some, there was a meeting held last Friday, August 2, where the staff was told the magazine was shutting down effective immediately with severance packages to follow.

Our sympathies go out to the staffers who lost their jobs. Although it was only a magazine, for many people things like Game Informer are a special part of this pastime of ours. Losing another publication sucks, but losing a livelihood is even worse. We with them the best.

Well dang. To my own embarrassment, I didn’t even realize Game Informer was still around. I do have plenty of fond memories of it, and FuncoLand which was a font of joy to myself and my buddies throughout the 90s.

I’m with you, Robert — best wishes to the Game Informer staff, and thanks for those 33 years!
