Françoise Cadol, the French voice of Lara Croft in several Tomb Raider games, has recently come out with a formal notice to publisher Aspyr regarding accusations of the use of AI to replicate her voice in Tomb Raider 1-4 Remastered without her consent.
In a recent interview with French publication Le Parisien on September 10, 2025, Cadol explained that it was fans of the Tomb Raider games that pointed out similarities between Lara Croft’s voice (Cadol) from the original games and the voice used in the recent remasters.
Cadol stated in the interview:
“Very quickly, these buyers of the compilation realized that the voice of Lara Croft, who gives gameplay instructions, was not mine. It caused a real uproar among the community.”
It seems that the issue first arose back in August 2025 when Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered released Patch 2, which included restored lines from the original games. However, its claimed that Aspyr used AI to replicate Cadol’s voice for the restored lines rather than requesting her to re-record the lines herself. Cadol’s lawyer, Jonathan Elkaim, has also claimed that you can “immediately notice” the use of AI voice due to “a very strong metallic impact, very chopped, without intonation.” Elkaim and Cadol have issued a formal notice to Aspyr, requesting for the compilation to be withdrawn and provide supporting documentation to determine the number of copies sold.
Since the events in August, Aspyr have released a hot fix for Patch 2 to “address unauthorized AI-generated content.” The publishers have claimed that they had addressed the issue by “removing all AI voiceover content, while retaining the improvements made in the previous update.”
