ORIGINAL STORY

Have you finished New Pokémon Snap and wished there was more to do? You’re in luck, because The Pokémon Company will be releasing a free update to the game that brings additional Pokémon and new areas to explore. You can get a small glimpse right here:

The update will be coming the game beginning on August 3. There will be 20 new Pokémon to see and three additional areas to peruse. All for the price of zero dollars! Not too shabby. Will you be checking it all out come Tuesday? Tell us in the comments!

UPDATE July 30, 2021

The new areas are the “Secret Side Path”, the “Mightywide River”, and the “Barren Badlands.” Each new area seems to be its own new course and not a alternate route on an existing course which is exciting to hear! Here is what we know about each so far:

  • Secret Side Path (Day/Night) – On this course, the NEO-ONE shrinks to a size so tiny that blades of grass look like trees and Pokémon look gigantic! Not only will the Pokémon be larger, the sounds they make will be louder too such as their footsteps and breathing. Players will likely see new behaviors and snap photos from interesting angles.
  • Mightywide River (Day/Night) –This area is reminiscent of the original Pokémon Snap River course. Like the previous River course, you will be taking photos as you travel down river. And be on the lookout for rapids! The Mightywide River is the water source that provides the whole Belusylva Island with sustenance. Sounds a bit like the Amazon or Nile river. Mightywide will likely attract all sorts of Pokémon and adds world building to the islands of Lental.
  • Barren Badlands (Day/Night) -In this final area, you will travel through the badlands of Voluca Island. The badlands are created by dry winds from the desert below and the area has many interesting features. Luckily, you will be safe within your NEO-ON, because the Barren Badlands have geysers and poisonous, gas-spewing swamps! Pokémon in this area are known to hide underground or in rocky cliffs, so keep your eyes peeled!

Each new area will have a combination of Pokémon already in the game as well as new Pokémon. Some of the new Pokémon that will appear in the update are Mew, Gryados, Shroomish, Snorlax, Psyduck, Faraligator, and more!

Many players have already snapped photos of all 214. This update will likely bring back players who’ve completed the game as well as entice others who have yet to pick the game up. New Pokémon Snap has already well over outsold the original N64 game. We can only hope that this free update is a positive sign that Nintendo and the Pokémon Company wish to continue adding content and hopefully turn the games into an entire spin off series.
