The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a hit from Illumination, banking over $1 billion at the box office in less than a month. This just may open the door for Nintendo to want to create more movies set within its universe.

During a recent interview with Polygon, producer Eiji Aonuma was asked about a movie adaptation starring Link and if it could be a possibility. While he seemed open to the idea, that isn’t all that is necessary to break ground and begin production.

Aonuma, alongside the director of Tears of the Kingdom, Hidemaro Fujibayashi, both seem interested with Fujibayashi saying, “Maybe the voice of the fans is what’s important here.”

The Zelda series has been around for 35 years with Breath of the Wild being the fourth highest selling game on Switch, getting close to 30 million copies sold. With Tears of the Kingdom’s recent release and swift rise to the top, already becoming 2023’s highest rated game of the year, this aids in showcasing the franchises timeless popularity.
