Within just a few short months, Nintendo Switch has proven to be just as beloved by independent developers as Wii U was. Blaster Master Zero has become one of the eShop’s bigger indie hits, and now the title will get some free DLC, featuring characters from another pair of popular indie titles: Shantae and Shovel Knight!
The characters will be released separately. Shantae will be available for free starting tomorrow and running through July 19. Shovel Knight will be available for free starting August 5 and lasting through August 19. Both DLC characters will be available after their promotional weeks, at a price point of $1.99. These won’t just be new skins, however! Both characters will have powers and abilities that reflect the games they originated in. Shovel Knight has his signature downward strike, while Shantae has the ability to change into different animal forms.
This is far from the first time that either of these characters has made a cameo appearance in another indie game. Most recently, Shantae appeared in Runbow, while Shovel Knight appeared in Yooka-Laylee. It’s certainly nice to see smaller developers working together to increase the strength and visibility of some of these relatively newer gaming icons. If it helps attract new players to more strong games, it’s definitely a good thing!
