Limited Run Games has announced that they’re partnering with Best Buy to bring a select number of Switch titles to the retailer, in-store and online.
So far, Yooka-Laylee, Golf Story, and a yet-to-be-announced title are the three games Best Buy will be carrying. Limited Run Games is known for being opposed to traditional retail, as it often results in small margins for developers, but the publisher claims this partnership eliminates many of the middle-men that contribute to the lesser margins.
Having a traditional retail outlet will also allow Limited Run to partner with larger publishers that have previously expressed concerns with working with them due to their games’ lack of presence in retail stores.
Best Buy will only be able to order a limited quantity of the games they’ll be selling and won’t be able to reorder more stock once they’re sold out. This means, on average, only about 3-7 copies of a given Limited Run game will be available on shelves at a Best Buy location. Customers that order games from Limited Run will receive their copies before Best Buy stores receive theirs, and Collector’s Editions will remain exclusive to Limited Run’s site.
Copies of Limited Run titles purchased at Best Buy will still be numbered as part of their Limited Run Switch Collection, but will feature variant art different from the copies sold on Limited Run’s site. Best Buy copies also won’t include trading cards. Consumers that don’t have a Best Buy in their region can purchase and print the variant art off of Limited Run’s site for $0.99.
Limited Run has made it clear that they will announce upfront, before a game’s release, if it will be sold via Best Buy, as well.
